Editorial
Staff

In a word, the Class of 1 980 is
Individualistic, each student with his
own flair and style. From vocational to
intellectual, from artistic to athletic,
each member makes up the whole.
We, the yearbook staff and members
of the senior class, hope that this
book has in some way illustrated the
many perspectives of our class.

Each in a class by itself,

All with a tool for the world.

Life will use it,

If we can bring ourselves to

give.

Dedication

Dedication, character, integrity, loyalty,
comnnitment are qualities found in very few
people. Yet these very high ideals describe
Mr. Hardie Pierce, for he exemplified them
every day of his life. He not only
maintained these standards, but
encouraged his students and players to
develop them as well, in a constant effort
to urge others to improve themselves.

Mr. Pierce was proud of being a teacher
and a coach and deeply loved his family,
school and community. Futhermore, in the
words of colleague Martha Christian, he
reminded us that "there were people not
intimidated by power, people undaunted
by ridicule." Finally, Mr. Pierce personified
the word gentleman to the end.

On behalf of the class of 1 980, as well
as ail who knew and loved him, the 1980
TORCH is dedicated to the memory of Mr.
Hardie Pierce.

TO: The Class of 1 980

In June, the Class of 1980 will conclude one phase of
their living experiences and begin another. During the
past twelve years of formal education you have received
many suggestions from parents, friends and teachers
regarding the manner in which you are to live and to
attain success. As you look back upon your high school
years at Silver Lake Regional, they will be ones reflecting
fond memories of academic, athletic, and social
development. We all reach a point in life where we talk
about the "good old days." Hopefully, your reflections of
the "good old days" of your high school experience have
made you better individuals and productive, contributing
members of our society. My personal best wishes to each
of you for a long, healthy, and enjoyable life.
Paul Squarcia
Superintendent

1)Do it now! 2)Recognize, relate, assimilate and apply
principles from what you hear, see, read or experience
that are applicable to you and may help you solve your
problems, achieve your goals and bring your dreams into
reality. Did you come here because you believed in the
correctness of your principal's statement that through
educational opportunities offered here. Silver Lake
graduates will have acquired a sense of social
commitment which will cause you to make a meaningful
difference to society? I trust so.
No one can blame you for doubting whether you can
make a meaningful difference. But before you get to the
question of CAN, you must answer the question of
whether you WANT TO. There isn't a prayer of your
being ABLE to until you determine that you want to.
Be assured that if you want to, you can and will bring
your dreams into reality, as countless thousands in every
walk of life have, by studying, understanding,
comprehending and applying the principles contained in
inspirational self-help action.

Albert F. Argenziano-Dir. Sec. Ed.

MMKaaiT\^» «B»»gWg»'

As members of the twenty-fifth class to graduate from
Silver Lake, each of you shares a special distinction. This
distinction is not only represented by your membership
in the Class of 1 980 but also by the accomplishments of
your class and of the classes which preceded you.
As members of the Class of 1 980 you have completed
your formal education with us. Hopefully, as with the
classes before yours, you leave Silver Lake prepared to
meet the many tasks which lie ahead.
In your travels through life, make every effort to put your
best foot forward. Each of you in your own way is a
special person. Take full advantage of your capabilities

and enjoy life to its fullest.

We wish you all the best.

Douglass L. Coupe .

Principal

There is a hope in our nation and community — it is you,
the graduate. As citizens you must ponder and make
inevitable changes for the good of all. The world is full of
uncertainty and misgivings, but we have confidence in
you to make rational decisions. Your high school
education is only a first step to fortify you for future
educational experiences.

TO AN ATHLETE DYING YOUNG

The time you won your town the game
We cheered you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.

To-day, the road all players come.
Shoulder-high we bring you home.
And set you at your threshold down.
It withers quicker than the rose.

Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut.
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears:

So set, before its echoes fade.
The fleet foot on the sill of shade.
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.

And round that early-laureled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead.
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl's.

1 12

We came in
Young and fresh,
Children the lot of us.
We learned to love.
We learned to cry.
We learned about love
As the years flew by.

We shared our dreams one by one
Making plans what must be done

They did their best.

We'll not forget.

Confident we'll take our walk

Up the stairs and shake that hand

Then wave good-bye.

But a tear will come

Oh, yes, we protested

Though deep inside we loved those days

NOW is what counts,

The future is HERE.

Julie LeMoine

Never say maybe when the answer's no.
Never say die when there's still time to go.
Never say hate 'cause love is the way.
And never give up. There'll be another day.

Never hang on to something that's not
'cause the past ain't the only thing you've got.
Never say it's easy 'cause you know that's a lie.
It's never easy to say goodbye.

Brenda McGrath

Poetry

Goals in Life

At the bottom of the water,
Holding my breath.
Looking toward the surface.
To follow a path
There is my goal.

I know it's a long way
And a hard course to travel.
But when I reach the surface
I'll breath once again.

Mike Peterson

The time has come for us to go;
We leave this place where we grew;
We depart from a world that is old;
And venture into a world that is new.

We will lead our lives;
We will go our own ways;
We may lose our old ties;
But new friends will be made.

Some will live with a flair;
Some will lead their lives with zest;
And some will live without a care,
But we'll live our lives to the best.

The class of '80 may never meet again;

Our paths may never cross.

But we'll remember these years and what we've gained.

And we'll long for what we've lost.

Paul Sherman

1979 was considered by many around the OCL as the
rebuilding year for Silver Lake softball after losing such
stalwart players as Pam Joyce, Diane Benson, Annette Lopes
and Cindy Saunders to graduation.

The season was highlighted by some fine individual
performances from Michele Agnew, who posted a 14-2
pitching record with a 0.96 earned-run-average of .650 and
.637 by Terri Galley and Paula Joyce respectively, and an
outstanding defensive year by Fran O'Donoghue, who made
just one error at third base after 1 6 the previous year.

Perhaps the most exciting moments from the season were our
three wins over Marshfield, winning 2-1 at home, 6-1 at
Marshfield, then winning 4-2 in the longest tournament game
(14-innings) on record in the State Tourney.

The real key to the season was the closeness of the team
members, the "family" philosophy exhibited by all and the
overall superior rapport developed between the players and
the coaching staff. We can only look forward to bigger and
better things in 1980 with all players returning. (J. Cotton)

The Silver Lake girls' tennis team had a good season working as a
team and brought their number of wins to an all-time high. They were
successful against Bridgewater-Raynham, Rockland, Hanson, and
Randolph and placed 7th in the league. The number of matches
played per meet with each school increased from three singles and two
doubles to five singles and two doubles. This allowed more girls to
play. Sue McGaffigan was the outstanding singles player with the
most wins for the season, and Karen Deschenes was the most-feared
and respected of our doubles teams. Enthusiasm was also high among
the junior varsity members who met and played their intramural
matches faithfully and did an incredible job while filling in for missing
regulars. Karen Kroon was our outstanding junior varsity player.

This year's field hockey team established a record in the
history of field hockey at Silver Lake. It completed an
undefeated and unscored-upon season by acquiring the Old
Colony League Championship for the second consecutive year
and by advancing as far as the semi-finals of the Southern
Mass. State Tournament, where the team was defeated by
Canton, 0-1 .

The Old Colony League record was nearly perfect at 11-0-1,
the tie being with Scituate. The overall record was 13-1-1 .
Although it is important to win with modesty, it is equally as
important to lose with pride which, in both cases, the girls
displayed well. Factors which attributed to the success of the
team's season included dedication, effort, teamwork, and the
ability to learn from an outstanding coach.
